10. Sikhism

Sikhism is the newest religion in India: Sikhism was founded in the Punjab region of India in the 15th century by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak. Its religious traditions were finalized by Guru Gobind Singh on the day of Visakhi, 13 April 1699. People of different religions, castes, regions (from remote places of Hindustan/India) decorated the Khalsa Panth by taking initiation from Sikh Gurus. The five beloved then gave nectar to Guru Gobind Singh and included him in the Khalsa. This historical event marked the history of almost 300 years of Sikhism.
The history of Sikhism is very similar to the history of Punjab and the socio-political environment of the 16th century in South Asia (present-day Pakistan and India). During the Islamic empire or known as Mughal Sultanate (1556-1707) over South Asia, the struggle of the Sikhs to protect the human rights of the people was from the rule of that time, due to which the Sikh Gurus sacrificed themselves at the hands of the Mughals.
During this sequence, the Sikhs were militarized against the Mughals. The ‘Sikh Raj’ was established under the Sikh Misls and under the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Sikh Empire, which despite being a powerful empire, was religiously tolerant and secular for Christians, Muslims and Hindus.
The establishment of the Sikh Empire is generally considered to be the pinnacle of the political plane of Sikhism, at which time Kashmir, Ladakh and Peshawar were included in the Sikh Empire. Hari Singh Nalwa was the chief general of the Khalsa army who led the Khalsa Panth and expanded the boundaries of the Sikh Empire by conquering the Darr-e-Khyber across from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Military, economic and government reforms took place during the management of the secular Sikh Empire.

The Bahāʾī religion originally grew out of the Bābī faith, or sect, which was founded in 1844 by Mīrzā ʿAlī Moḥammad of Shīrāz in Iran. He proclaimed a spiritual doctrine emphasizing the forthcoming appearance of a new prophet or messenger of God who would overturn old beliefs and customs and usher in a new era. Though new, these beliefs originated in Twelver Shiʿi Islam, which asserts a belief in the forthcoming return of the 12th imam (successor of Muhammad), who will renew religion and guide the faithful. Mīrzā ʿAlī Moḥammad first proclaimed his beliefs in 1844 and assumed the title of the Bāb.
Soon the Bāb’s teachings spread throughout Iran, provoking strong opposition from both the Shiʿi Muslim clergy and the government. The Bāb was arrested and, after several years of incarceration, was executed in 1850. Large-scale persecutions of his adherents, the Bābīs, followed.

The Salvation Army began on the streets of East London in 1865 when Methodists, William and Catherine Booth, abandoned the traditional concept of a church pulpit to take God’s word directly to the people. The couple also oversaw the world’s first free labour exchange and campaigned to improve working conditions.

In 1870, Charles Taze Russell and others formed a group in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to study the Bible. During the course of his ministry, Russell disputed many beliefs of mainstream Christianity including immortality of the soul, hellfire, predestination, the fleshly return of Jesus Christ, the Trinity, and the burning up of the world.
In 1876, Russell met Nelson H. Barbour; later that year they jointly produced the book Three Worlds, which combined restitutionist views with end time prophecy. The book taught that God’s dealings with humanity were divided dispensationally, each ending with a “harvest,” that Christ had returned as an invisible spirit being in 1874 inaugurating the “harvest of the Gospel age”, and that 1914 would mark the end of a 2520-year period called “the Gentile Times”, at which time world society would be replaced by the full establishment of God’s kingdom on earth. Beginning in 1878, Russell and Barbour jointly edited a religious journal, Herald of the Morning.
In June 1879, the two split over doctrinal differences, and in July, Russell began publishing the magazine Zion’s Watch Tower and Herald of Christ’s Presence, stating that its purpose was to demonstrate that the world was in “the last days,” and that a new age of earthly and human restitution under the reign of Christ was imminent.

As the support communities grew in size and needs, it became evident that an organization to combat the stigma of apostasy and the abuse faced by apostates was sorely-needed.
In 2013, EXMNA had filed for incorporation and soon after was granted 501(c)(3) status from the United States IRS as a registered non-profit. Despite self-evident need for a group to address the challenges facing those who leave Islam, the difficulties of establishing an organization of apostates soon became apparent.
